Roots That Resist is the printed memory of an inclusion process in the mountains of Tuluá, Valle del Cauca. Over several months, the Banco de Proyectos para las Comunidades brought together campesino families and the Indigenous Misak people of Barragán, Aguaclara, and the village of La Unión around the fire, the spoken word, and art. At MD Estudio Creativo, we turned those voices into something you can hold in your hands: a 32-page magazine and a digital experience that extends it.
A magazine that isn't a catalog of achievements
It is a map of voices, territories, and timelines that refuse to be erased. We laid out every page to let the reading breathe: editorial typography, documentary photography, social cartographies drawn by the community itself, and quotes that anchor each chapter. Four modules guide the journey.
- Identity & Territory: the map of reality, drawn with machete and mutual trust.
- Childhood & Future: the new seeds, girls and boys drawing clean rivers and fields without fear.
- Memory & Truth: the threads of history, where naming the past is the first act of healing.
- Action & Future: the fabric that sustains, with coexistence agreements, women's leadership, and generational handoff.
From print to screen
On the back cover, a QR code opens the digital experience: an interactive landing page that complements the magazine in a playful, easy-to-follow way. There you'll find the territories, the eight gatherings, the four modules, the impact data, the educational cards, and a mind map of the project. The magazine is read; the website is explored.
Impact
We reached 100 direct participants and more than 300 indirect beneficiaries. A process led by Fundación Cultural Los Chagualos with support from the Ministerio del Interior and PNUD. MD contributed the design, layout, art direction, and web experience.
"Remembering isn't staying in the past, it's sowing with memory so new fruit can be born without fear."
